Helping employees prepare for retirement – one step at a time

Their story

Planning for retirement can be daunting for employees… from decisions about company plans, to Social Security to Medicare, the process has steps and important deadlines that can’t be missed. To help employees wade through the decisions, Illinois Tool Works (ITW) created a single, holistic guide for those planning to retire from the company. Goals for the guide included:

  • Target the distribution to those nearing retirement
  • Consolidate and streamline information from multiple resources
  • Provide a clear picture of the important action items for employees
  • Breakdown complex processes into manageable steps

Solution

ROC helped ITW create the Retirement Planning Guide: a one-stop-shop for information about retirement income and health care options.

The Guide opens with visual timelines outlining the key steps employees must take before/after their retirement date, addresses commonly asked questions from employees, and gives actionable information on the company-provided plans.

Employees with at least ten years of service receive a copy of the Guide when they turn age 55. Plus, the Guide is available on ITW’s internal portal.

Results

  • ITW won 1st place in Pensions & Investments 2021 Eddy Awards for pre-retirement preparation. The P&I Eddy Awards were created over 25 years ago to identify and reward the best practices in providing investment education to defined contribution plan participants. The awards are judged by an independent panel of plan sponsors and consultants.
  • Internally, the Retirement Planning Guide has received positive feedback from HR leaders and employees.
  • The Guide has even boosted online engagement. Data from ITW’s internal portal shows a 35% increase in views over a four-month period (compared to the prior pre-retirement materials during the same four-month period).
