Transitioning to retirement takes careful planning and is a major life event for employees. With over 15,000 employees eligible for retirement benefits, ITW needed to refresh their retirement planning resources in order to:

ROC helped ITW create The Retirement Planning Guide: a one-stop-shop for information about retirement income and health care options.

The Guide opens with visual timelines outlining the key steps employees must take before/after their retirement date, addresses commonly asked questions from employees, and gives actionable information on the company-provided plans.

Employees with at least ten years of service receive a copy of the Guide when they turn age 55. Plus, the Guide is available on ITW’s internal portal.


  • ITW won a 1st place, 2020 Eddy Award for communications excellence from Pensions & Investments.
  • Internally, the Retirement Planning Guide has received positive feedback from HR leaders and employees.
  • The Guide has even boosted online engagement. Data from ITW’s internal portal shows a 35% increase in views over a four month period (compared to prior versions of pre-retirement materials, also during a four month period).
